MSL Institute Founding Mission
MSL Institute was founded in 2004 to encourage the discussion of ethical and legal/compliance issues around MSL deployment: how companies can appropriately use the MSL role and reduce the risks of off-label promotional concerns.
MSL Institute’s mission was to increase awareness of the MSL profession and to win recognition for the MSL role as a sustainable, bona fide, and critical role for the future of the pharmaceutical industry.

For MSL Institutes’ founder Jane Chin, this mission was highly personal: she had seen first-hand the effects of inappropriate use of the MSL role on the MSL professionals’ perception of their job, company, and their industry as a whole.
Seven years after its founding, MSL Institute has completed its mission. Medical science liaisons have gained recognition in the life science industry to help create true competitive advantage for companies. Companies know there are lines of compliance relating to MSLs that they could only cross at their own risks. There are conferences and meetings specific to MSLs and MSL issues. There are service providers who create MSL-specific products and services.
Today, the MSL profession is no longer shrouded in mystery as it once was. The issues and challenges that were once only whispered about among MSLs themselves have since become “common sense” and openly discussed among members of the MSL community.
Now, it’s up to you, medical science liaisons, to take what has become “common sense” and create the foundational wisdom that will ensure that the Medical Science Liaison Role endures.
